Have you noticed how the Tudors, especially Elizabeth 1, feature on so many TV programmes? Even today she is treated as a star. Was she really marvellous? Her portraits flatter her,.She wanted people to see her power, but none of her thoughts or feelings. How can we find out more?
Elizabeth 1 ruled from 1558-1603, following religious crises, and she gave England stability. European leaders were Catholics, and wanted to remove her, and some Englishmen too were hostile. Elizabeth relied on a few trusted advisers, working them hard, and always anxious. Praising the queen was a courtier’s job, in plays, poems, and gestures. If you upset the Queen, you were in trouble.
